Etymology: Unclear κοχλιάξων (-άζων), -οντος m. kind of machine-screw (Orib.; after ἄξων?). - From Lat. coc(h)lear, -āris n. (from coc(h)lea) as backformation κοχλιάριον `spoon', also as measure (Dsc., medic.); orig. name of a spoon, of which the sharp end was used to draw the snail from its shell; cf. W.-Hofmann s. coc(h)lear. Connection with κόγχος,κόγχη (s. v.) is evident; it has (Pre-Greek) prenasalization. Note also the vowel-variation in κόχλαξ\/ κά-.
